What is a flotation tank?
A flotation tank is a lightless, soundproof tank in which subjects float in
salinated water at skin temperature. Flotation tanks are also known as isolation tanks, salt water spas, sensory deprivation tanks, and REST
(Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) chambers.
Flotation REST is a special type of REST popularized by
John C.
Lilly, M.D.,
an American physician and psychoanalyst. Essentially, you spend an hour or so
lying quietly in the dark, suspended by a warm solution of
Epsom
salt so dense that you float effortlessly on its surface. Epsom salt
solution has a variety of accepted
medical benefits and uses, while floating in a flotation tank
has been demonstrated to be effective in achieving deep relaxation and
improved emotional state.
Our flotation tank
Our flotation tank is really a room. The interior of the room is 8 ft (2438 mm)
wide by 8 ft (2438 mm) long by 6ft (1828 mm) high. The tank occupies the entire floor area and is filled to a depth of 12 inches (304 mm) with a sterile water solution saturated with 2,000 lbs (907 kg) of
Epsom salt. The room is built so that all outside distractions such as sight, sound, tactile sensations, and
the sensation of gravity are eliminated. Our unique flotation room is equipped
with underwater speakers through which relaxing music can be played and a light
inside if you choose to use it. The water is warmed to 35.5 degrees Centigrade
(95.9 Fahrenheit), approximately the same as
normal human body temperature.
